White Oaks Methodist Church under contract to erect in June, 1888
- This picture speaks volumes about the people and times in white oaks in 1898. It had been 5 years since the faithful railroad meeting had taken place and it was obvious that little hope of ever having a Railroad come through was the outlook. Old Abe was still producing. Many other sources of long term economics were being considered, coal. Timber. Copper and granite among them. The picture tells us the church was vibrant and well attended. It was mostly a meeting place for the middle class women and their kids. Proper dress was the norm as well. Again, White Oaks was far more civilized than its size would indicate. Even now in 1898 this sense of civility was the norm even when the immediate economic future was uncertain.
- In fact within 18 months of this picture most of the people photographed had either left town or were delinquent in their property taxes and faced foreclosure. None of the main city leaders such as Watson, Hewitt brown, Ozanne, Ziegler, Taliaferro, weed , Ruisdale, or Paden attended. The men of the town had many fraternal organizations available as well as gentleman’s saloons to act as their away from home diversion. The church was the female sanctuary
Placement of the Church on this site was found in error
All the facts were Corner of Jicarilla and Placer… Seemed very logical 🙂 However recent findings 10-31-2021 Shows without a doubt it’s the church. See picture below. See proof on link SEE HERE

A very interesting series of meetings was held at the Methodist church during last Saturday and Sunday. The presiding elder of the charge, Rev J.T. French preached several very eloquent and practical sermons, gave an interesting talk to the Sabbath school and spoke many helpful and encouraging words. A special quire was organized which rendered the music all that could be desired. Rev French will return sometime during next month due notice which will be given. compiled by Michelle White
