When James P. COLP was born in 1856 in Nova Scotia, Canada, his father, John, was 47 and his mother, Mary, was 41. He married Lucy A. Haight Colp on January 28, 1890, in Jackson, Michigan. He had six brothers and five sisters. The earliest newspaper articles with his name show up in the Lincoln County Leader on Nov 3rd, 1883 and the last April 20th, 1889. According to the newspaper articles, James was an Assayer, Superintendent, farmer, and dredge engineer. In 1883, James Colp was the superintendent of the Little Mac Mine

The Authors would like to point out the newspaper clipping below. Because James Colp worked in the mines, and was a “Dredge Engineer” It is almost with 100 certainty that the 1, – 4 inch pipes and other machinery, and pumps sold at public auction were used on the South Homestake Mine. More than likely, they paid James monthly for his water rights and maybe also his services?

On the marriage certificate, it lists their couple’s address as White Oaks New Mexico. So, most likely, James went up to Michigan to ask her brides parents for her hand and returned to White Oaks shortly thereafter. His wife Lucy A. passed away on February 5, 1909, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 49. They had been married 19 years.
