Francisco Cordoba, seated on the right and a pal, Manuel Gonzales. His father Jose Cordoba, Justice of the Peace in Las Tablas, and Scipio Salazar removed the leg irons from Billy the Kid after his last escape on 28 April 1881. These were first-hand accounts of that era passed on to my grandparents Roman and Lucinda Nuñez.   Francisco pictured in later years with his wife Marianita Romero. Francisco lived in Agua Azul and homesteaded with my grandparents at the Nuñez ranch at Border Hill, where he died in 1936 at the age of 70.
Sheriff Pat Garrett was in Las Tablas the previous day collecting taxes, and had just missed the Kid. Ironically, a century later LC Sheriff Tom Sullivan had the older photo on his desk mistakenly identifying Francisco Cordoba as Pat Garrett. My mother Patsy corrected Sheriff Sullivan by stating “that is my Great Grandfather, not Pat Garrett”! See less
