Bentura Girón

The establishment of early Lincoln County came from many directions, as we all aware. Many of our families came and found their place and stayed, some of those families are still in their original communities; some other of the families moved about in Lincoln County.

The folks of La Luz (a little south of Tularosa) came from the Rio Abajo area as a group although they were from disparate communities there, it would be interesting to figure out why. The folks that settled Tularosa came mostly from Mesilla, Doña Ana County and Ylseta Texas (near El Paso), purportedly because they were flooded out of their farms on the lower Rio Grande. However all this happened around 1863 which might lead a history oriented person to wonder if it might has been politically motivated.

But, anyhow, back to wandering around Lincoln County; Ventura Girón came to La Luz with the first settlers and was instrumental in the building of la Muralla, a defensive fortification in the community. He is also listed as one of the original founders of Tularosa. He came to the area from La Jolla as a very young man, born about 1847, his parents were Cornelio Girón and Maria Jesus Trujillo.

In 1870 we find him in Lincoln with his widowed mother and his siblings around 1876 he married Consepción Duran from Tularosa, daughter of Jose Duran and Dolores Sedillo. 1880 finds him in San Patricio with his extended family in tow. He must have kept his La Luz property, for in 1896 he sold his property there to the railroad and moved up to White Oaks to work in the mines. Finally moving to Capitan where he died at the age of 82. His daughter Delfina/Delfida married Gregorio Herrera from Capitan in 1907. His son, Amado married Abelina Zamora also from Capitan in 1908.
